Oh I’ve been dying to tell you this news for so long, and the moment has finally arrived. To say I’m excited, or ecstatic, or even ‘over the moon’ would all be understatements.

As most of you already know, I love Canada – I love the land, I adore the people, culture and history. So when Angela from Ace Camps asked if I’d like to lead a workshop and if so, where in the world would I like to be while leading this workshop, I said Vancouver…

This workshop will be about finding inspiration in the everyday through styling and photography, and I’ll be sharing with you how I go about my work and life, doing just that:

“The core of the workshop will be about enhancing your everyday; finding beauty in the ordinary; learning to see your surroundings in a new light and being uplifted by the simple things in life.”

You will not need the best or latest camera gear, instead I will teach you how to get the best out of what you have. We’ll be doing some mini photo shoots around the city at some amazing locations (including some of the local boutiques of course), and we’ll learn how to create beautiful images as well as get more out of our everyday. Ace Camps are workshop-holidays, so during the days together we will get a chance to roam the surrounding land on our own, perhaps head to Whistler for the day and get some mountain air…

…Then we’ll head to Granville Island, and check out the incredible farmers markets, artisan studios and Emily Carr Institute…

We’ll wander, we’ll chat, and we’ll gather some of our found treasures and learn how to create some magical images…

Oh, this is going to be so. much. fun. I do hope you can join me! The workshop will be from September 22 – 27, and all the details including itinerary and travel information are right here. These are intimate workshops and places are limited, so please make sure you follow the steps and register as soon as possible if you would like to secure your place. Boy oh boy oh boy, I can’t believe I’ll be in Vancouver in less that 4 months time…

wandering around Yaletown, care to join me?

I took these photos on my old canon AE-1 film camera about 7 years ago while wandering around granville island, I love the softness of the light and that beautiful tree
………………………………

Thank you Angela from Ace Camps for asking me to be one of your workshop instructors, it’s such a privilege to be part of an incredible bunch of creative people, all of whom I admire.

It’s Tuesday already! My weekend was quite a blur, it went by so fast and today, I do find myself quite exhausted once again. I know what you are going to say – slow down, and don’t forget to breathe. I know, I know! And I am, I promise – Sunday I did get a moment or two to chill out, and Saturday I managed to squeeze in some much overdue yoga in between work. I loved reading all about your weekend plans in the previous post - you guys do the most fun things! It was wonderful to be able to live vicariously through you, it felt like you each popped into the (blog)house over the weekend like lovely neighbours do. Thank you for taking the time to let me know what you got up to.

This week I have two book launch events happening. The first one is a private book launch at The English Bookshop which I organised especially for the artisans and store owners featured in the book – a chance for all of them to meet and buy some books. I will be sure to take some photos of the event for you and post them right here in the (blog)house. The second event as you know is this Saturday’s wander. The wander is fully booked and I am so very excited – it is a great bunch of people that I am really looking forward to meeting and wandering with – for those who will not be able to participate on the wander there will be afternoon tea out in the courtyard of the boekhandel van Rossum at 4pm, so please meet me there for some tea and cake, it will be a lovely way to spend the afternoon. (below is a little sign I made for the shop customers)…

Right now, amongst a plethora of other things, I am making some pretty garlands for the van Rossum window display, would you like to take a peek at what I’ve made so far? Here you go…

I am using some of the left over materials from the American Book Center window. The peonies dotted around my home were the inspiration for the paper flowers. And Irene from van Rossum has made a super sweet canal house row. I will be going to the store tomorrow morning to put up the rest of the garlands so I’ll take some photos for you then so you can see.

And fyi, the window display I made for the American Book Center will be dismantled this Thursday (it’s been 3 weeks already ) so if you live in Amsterdam, you have one more day to see it in all it’s glory.

xx

PS I may just be slightly obsessed with the handmade yellow striped paper, I really cannot get enough of it (except I just went back to vlieger and it’s all gone! boo hoo)

I’m still recovering from all the attention at Saturday’s book launch. It was a great success, I was (and am still) overwhelmed by the number of people who came along and the amount of books I signed. I was so very nervous before the event, so many “what if’s” were running through my head. But as soon as I sat down at the signing table, all the nerves went away as I spent the next hour signing my little heart out and happily chatting away. Thank you so much to all who attended – you really made me feel like a star…

So would you like a re-cap of the launch? Okay, well, here is how it went: French Boy and I arrived at about 2:30pm. We went off to buy some flowers for the table, by then I was super anxious. It was a very hot day – quite unusual for Amsterdam so I was sure that everyone who had planned to come to the launch would instead, go to the beach. I had no idea if there would be any music, or if the nibbles would arrive in time, or if my publisher had made her flight. Yes that’s right, my publisher from New York! It was the first time I was going to meet her face to face – we have worked on 2 books together and have been in close contact via email for more than 2 years, and Saturday marked our first ever meeting.

Once French Boy and I came back to the American Book Center with the flowers, everything started coming together – within minutes of each other, 2 friends (who didn’t know each other at all) turned up with instruments! Arun (who is a freelance journalist here in Amsterdam and had recently interviewed me for an article in the June issue of Time Out – more about that soon) brought his guitar and Simone (who plays with one of my fave local bands, Point Quiet) brought her violin. They decided to play together so off they went to find a little quiet alley to do some quick practice and then came back just in time for the first arrival of guests. Their music was INCREDIBLE. It was exactly what I had hoped for and envisioned, and as soon as they started playing I was filled with happiness. Thank you Arun and Simone!

Then came my dear friends Yvette and Sophie from Aan de Amstel with their absolutely gorgeous nibbles which were letter-shaped pastries spelling out “amsterdam made by hand” and “pia jane bijkerk”…

Aren’t they clever? They also made little savoury biscuits that said “pia!” on each one, it was really amazing. Thank you so much Yvette and Sophie!!

All the while I was signing books and when I did dare to look up from the table I noticed a long line going all the way back, I couldn’t believe it! There were so many people. I was thrilled to see familiar faces amongst the unfamiliar too – friends, local shop owners and designers, everyone made me feel very special. And everyone adored the barbara munsel dress I was wearing: On the Thursday evening before the signing, Barbara came to Amsterdam to help fit a dress for me at YDU (which, as some of you already know, is one of the stores featured in the book). The dress we picked suited me to a tee – I’ll be sure to take a pic of it in it’s entirety so you can all get a good look at it, I’m completely in love with it, thank you barbara!!

Low and behold my publisher Angela and her husband Rea were sneakily standing in line, waiting to say hello, I was so happy to see them. We chatted for a bit and then I got back to the table to sign books and meet guests. What a rush, I was really on top of the world at that stage…

And throughout the whole afternoon, good friends & talented photographers Alan Jensen and Cath Conroy snapped photographs. You guys rock, thank you!!

I received incredible gifts as well, all of which I want to share with you here in the (blog)house in coming days. I’m overwhelmed by the generosity and encouragement I received on the day, I just cannot thank each of you enough…

I’ll be back later to let you know about the other two events in Amsterdam that I’ll be a part of in celebration of the release of the book this month. For now though, I need some quiet time to catch my breath.

But now I’m refreshed and ready to get on with the rest of the week’s plans, starting with the last post in the series, the window display “in the making“ (if you’ve missed the first 5 posts, just scroll down this page to find them). Are you ready? The first photo in this post is a little sneak peek of the finished display, but for now I want to take you all back with me to the beginning of yesterday, when I gathered all the little display items in my basket and headed to the american book center by foot. French Boy carried the large cardboard cutouts. It was a rather grey day and about half way there I thought it might rain but it didn’t, thank goodness, because if it did well, let’s not think about it! Anyway, below is my basket of goodies…

As soon as we arrived I began attaching the banners overhead, and then began assembling the main display…

French Boy assisted me the whole afternoon, handing me tape, scissors, string, and taking pics of each stage – what a treasure. Then, we had two lovely visitors stop by to say hello: Marie and Yvette! That was quite a treat…

It didn’t take long to assemble the whole display, probably about an hour/hour and a half – with lots of chit chatting in between…

Then came the window painting…

In my sketch I was thinking of painting a tree but on the day I decided a tree would visually cut into the display so I decided to paint vines and flowers coming in from the sides instead. The painting was a lot of fun. I could have happily whiled away the entire afternoon doing this… oh, right, I did…

And that was that! Suddenly it was 6pm and I had to pull myself away from the window painting. While I was painting the window a number of passers-by remarked “mooi mooi” or “lekker” or “leuk”… which all translate as “nice!” so that was lovely to hear. Now, would you like to see some of the final result? Okay, first here are some close up details…

Each canal house has cut out windows and in the windows I taped some pages from the book. But not so you could read the pages in full – just enough with the hope to entice and inspire.

And overhead I attached word banners with taglines like “a little book of enchanting wanders” – Rani supplied me with a number of catchy taglines to use and this is one of them, thank you Rani! I also liked her flatmate’s suggestion which was “Amsterdam: Made by Hand – handier than your iphone”. Clever! I didn’t use that one though (sorry Rani’s flatmate, but I very much appreciate your input ).

At first I was thinking that I’d write a tagline on the window but then I decided not to in the end as I felt it would be a bit messy. So at the last minute - yesterday morning in fact – I made these word banners and I’m really happy I did!

Also at the last minute – late Monday evening in fact – I decided to make little origami boats for under the bridges. I used left over bits of paper and tape.

On one of the canal houses I layered it with two different papers and then cut out butterfly shapes to expose the paper below. I wanted to make the window as layered as possible. Which wasn’t an easy feat since the window is actually only 26 cm deep. But with the painted window, the banners, and the colourful canal houses and bridges I think it does the trick. So would you like to see the window in full? Of course I’m going to tell you that it’s much better to go and visit it in person but for those of you who will not be in Amsterdam over the coming few weeks, here it is below. All you have to do is click on the image and a large version of it will open in another window…

I hope you’ve enjoyed this series of “in the making” posts showing my creative process from concept to realisation. Thanks for all your wonderful comments over the past week – you’ve made this project extra fun, your encouragement along each step has helped my creativity tremendously. Now I have to get cracking on the rest of the book launch plans for this Saturday – anyone know a musician who would like to play a little something at the launch? I’m still looking for someone so if you know of anyone, please let me know. I’m thinking violinist, or accordionist, or acoustic guitar – anything acoustic, and anything simple, soft and melodic.

In my next post I’ll be letting you know the other book events happening in June, so stay tuned…

xx

Today is the day that Amsterdam: Made by Hand is officially on sale around the world – hooray! To celebrate it’s arrival, I will be assembling the window display this afternoon at the American Book Center. Yesterday and late into the evening I was busy with all the finishing touches a.k.a “the 20% that takes 80% of the overall time”. It’s tedious but also a lot of fun. I was able to use lots of left over scraps of paper and ribbon…

…so my next post will be the finished display, wish me luck!

On Saturday, this little boat was full of buzzing activity. My fabulous friend Rani came over to help make the window display and boy, did she work hard! 9 hours of cutting and pasting, I’m quite sure she never wants to see purple, yellow, pink, red and orange paper and ribbon ever again. Needless to say I’m very grateful for her helping hand, there is no way I could have created this without her (I’d certainly be a frantic mess right now instead of a relaxed mess!) – thank you Rani!

Above is “the bunting making ” station. Rani was busy assembling these gorgeous flags with wax paper and ribbon. Pretty, non?

And then came “the Amsterdam: Made by Hand book cover garland making” station. That’s one long sentence, and it’s one long garland!

We chose orange ribbon for the book cover garland as the book’s spine is orange and so we thought that would be rather fitting. Here I am below sketching and cutting the heavy duty cardboard cut outs. It was pretty tough cardboard, I was kind of regretting such heavy duty stuff but then I really didn’t want the display falling all over the place in the window so, it was a little more labour intensive but hopefully worth it in the long run…

From top left, clockwise: moodboard and cardboard cut outs; French Boy chopping onions and garlic for one of his delectable dishes; me sketching.

But it was French Boy’s catering that stole the day’s events. Yes, he decided that would be his thing for the day, and cater he did! When Rani arrived at the boat he handed us each a plate of crepes which he’d just made, they were smothered with chocolate spread and we devoured them in a heartbeat – they were the perfect way to start the day! Then for lunch he made a delicious and healthy spicy tuna pasta with steamed green beans on the side. He brought us cups of tea throughout the afternoon, poured us an apéritif of cremant at around 6pm, and then his pièce de résistance was a boeuf carottes with boiled turnips and parsely. And then chocolate and strawberries for dessert!! It was quite a feast, and it made the day extra special and fun.

……………………………………………..

Thank you Rani and French Boy!!

Next up: adding the finishing touches.

I was just thinking this morning about how, because of the nature of my work, I am not able to show you my projects while they are “in the making”. Part of the job of being in this type of creative industry is keeping the work-in-progress as close to one’s skin as possible until it hits the shelves – it’s possibly one of the hardest parts of my job because when I get a good idea I want to shout it out at the top of my lungs and share it with the world immediately. Instead, when people ask me what I’m working on I have to just say with a smile “stuff: really really good stuff”.

But this morning I thought, why not share the “making of” the american book center window display while I’m actually making it? Why not, right? I think it’s one of the only projects I have going on at the moment that I can share with you while I’m going through each stage. I may not have the time to go in depth about each phase but I can share photos as I go, and you can follow along my train of thought via the visuals. So what do you say, are you in? Yes? Okay, great! This will be fun…

So just to give you a quick brief so you’re up to speed on the whole window display progress thus far: The window dimensions are 170cm high x 430cm wide x 26 cm deep. It’s a tricky space to work with – very narrow, very long. There are also restrictions to take into consideration like the display can only take up about 70 cm of height in the window so that there is still clear space to see through, and there can be nothing fragile or expensive in there in case of theft. It’s also a difficult space to work in so the display needs to be easy to slide into place (I learnt this the hard way the last time – I spent about 3 or 4 hours, squeezing into the side window space while the sun beat down on the window, trying to attach tiny thin pieces of string to the ceiling, it was a disaster!). So this time I’m trying to be smarter about it and create something that takes up the most amount of space and can just slide into position. This weekend my lovely friend Rani is going to help me make the display and then I’ll be putting it up in the window this coming Tuesday.

To give you a visual idea of the space, above is a photo of the current window display showcasing tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher’s book Encyclopedia for The Art and History of Tattooing (which looks like an amazing book by the way!). As you can see, it’s a huge window, rather daunting actually. And as you know, my book is rather little. So the challenge is on! It would of course, take too many Amsterdam: Made by Hands to make a visual impact in that window so I’m taking the backdrop of Amsterdam as my window display inspiration…

…hang on, that’s not Amsterdam, it’s Paris! It’s Alexia’s cute atelier to be precise, but it’s inspiring for what I have in mind. I love the bright colours of these shops, particularly the red and yellow, I think these colours would really pop in the window. In my home at the moment I have some beautiful droopy tulips and other dying flowers, they have been a great source of inspiration too…

(here I imagine colourful garlands, perhaps made from paper flowers in bold hues)

(and here I love the colour combo of the yellow with the purple, reds, oranges)

Speaking of red, yellow, and everything gorgeous in between, I spotted Amy from Eat Drink Chic’s lovely engagement/wedding photos the other day - I adore the flower display, take a look…

above two photos by jonathon ong

…so sweet! Although I cannot have glass or anything like this in the window, I love the colour combination. So with all of the above in mind, here is the colour palette I’m going to work with…

I’ve been collecting some odd bits and bobs around the boat, on the search for some paper, fabric and ribbon that I have in these hues. This is what I’ve found so far…

And here are some wallpapers and tapes that I’ve scanned, these will work perfectly I think…

So that’s where I’m at so far. I haven’t told you what I plan to do exactly, but I will reveal more in ‘part two’. Have a lovely evening, mes amis.

xx
