Hi Pia, This is Harriet. Thanks for your lovely comments – it was the first time I had done a shoot at home so very nice to have so much attention from it. The SoHi story led to another one which is coming out in the next Australian Country Style ‘people’ section which will have more studio pics and some of my little family too. I have some baskets available for sale of which I can email photos and I am happy to answer your questions about basketry and my influences if I am able.

I am mad about baskets and love what they’ve done with things that are meaningful to them. That really is what a home should be all about – not some designers’ showcase, but full of items that are sentimental and pleasing to the individuals who live there. xo

I’ve done a course with an Aboriginal basket weaver and can weave baskets. Wish I had more time to do it more justice. I have dilly bags and others half made all around the place. Good thing they look so good even when they’re not finished.

The tradition of basket weaving is still alive in France – but I love those Aussie ones (not biased of course My my – from Amsterdam to Aussie in the blink of an eye. You are an inspiration!

Basket weaving is very fun and not difficult at all if you get the right instruction. I learned when I was a very small girl and it was an extremely soothing, satisfying activity. I suggest weaving with reeds (rather than woods slats) and finding someone whose work looks seamless to show you the way. A good basket is one where you can’t tell where one reed ends and another begins.

It was tons of fun and yes, very therapeutic. You should check out his shop, he’s a lovely fella.
