pia reads: vogue living…
Posted in interiors April 7th, 2009 by piablog

I simply must start my absolute favourite interior magazine line up with Vogue Living. Yes, perhaps it’s the Aussie in me but still, after years of perusing plenty of bookstore shelves around the world, no matter where I happen to be, it is a copy of Vogue Living that I’m carrying out the door, eager to sit down with a cup of tea (or verre de vin, depending on the time of day) and flip through the pages to take a peek inside some of the world’s most inspiring homes.

Pulling one story out of Vogue Living for this series is quite difficult… The publication recently celebrated it’s 40th birthday!! But having said that, one story in particular has always stood out in my mind so this is the one I will share with you today. This is a spread that I think was featured in the September 2005 issue (but don’t quote me on that!). It is the home of David and Nicole Page, founders of the very cool davidmetnicole. It was shot by Jonny Valiant, and I’m quite sure it was written and produced by Andrea Campos. Enjoy…

…I love that dining room! So simple, so eclectic, and so authentic…

Isn’t that a beautiful home? I love its rawness, and realness. It’s sophisticated but completely loose, honest and stylish. And there are so many style ideas in there- the japanese paper lanterns combined with long strands of black velvet ribbon; the empty frame overflowing with family snaps; the pinned velvet curtains in the doorways; the waxy fireplace; and the beautiful bed.

Editor David Clark has a discerning eye for inspiring interiors. The chosen feature stories are always a reflection of the times without being stuck in trends or style phases, nor is the publication always focused on homes with designer labels (I love that!). But to me what is most apparent, is that each issue is always one step ahead of the trends, and that’s definitely one of the reasons why I find myself drawn to it time and time again.

So! If you are not already an avid reader of Vogue Living, it’s never too late to become one…

PS Man, I’m thinking I missed my calling… should I be in sales or what?!! ;-)

PPS Disclaimer: I’m not employed by Vogue Living, in case you thought my sales pitch was that good.

my stack of vogue living has an impressive tower of pisa lean to it! invaluable inspiration like no other interior mag on the planet….remember marie claire lifestyle ms pia? the auz edition lasted two maybe three years? mid/late nineties? heralded the beginnings of the ‘editorial’ flavour that interior mags now tend to try to bring to their mags…..all caught moment and people moving through frame…it was georgous…sigh.

Vogue Living is one of my favourites too. Australians are a dab hand at interiors magazines.

By the way, VL designer Ebony Bizys has her own blog http://hellosandwich.blogspot.com/. She is a very clever artist.

david – thanks for the comment, and confirmation! xx

far out brussels sprout – yes I do think Aussies have a hold of some of the best interior mags around… i can’t wait to showcase more! thanks for the heads up about ebony. i will check out her blog pronto.

cricket – oh marie claire lifestyle, i remember! haha the ol’ walk through frame trick, i still use it as a styling option these days to fill up an empty space… Do you think they started it? I think you might be right. Petrina shot alot for them, she has a habit of starting photographic trends!

    dee – great!!

nelleke – (beautiful name by the way, how do you pronounce it?) Yes, i do love the Vogue Living covers! My faves are the ones with flowers, I think they were doing some flower stories a while back, or each Spring or something, just gorgeous.

    Yoli – yay!

Melissa – me too! It’s not fancy, that’s why I love it. It’s so real, and livable. I love livable, real spaces!

i think that if marie claire lifestyle didn’t start it, then they were at least ‘on trend’….on trend, nasty but appropriate!
Petrina has been a fav of mine for EVER, I love that you love her too…I am going to photograph my magazine stacks for you so you know that we are all reading the same bibles, and I LOVE that…different little bits of the globe yet all pulled together by similar visions and inspirations!!
ps the curtaining on the door in Nicole and Davids’ house – against the fab green…i have enjoyed at that bit of fabric placement since the month that Vogue came out…sigh.

Pia I love visiting your blog. It’s a wonderful place to escape. Thank you! You do everything so magically so I was very interested in perhaps getting a little bit of an idea as to how you get on for storing “things” if you are happy to share….

Sorry Pia – yes storage inside a home. I seem to have too many things – but a lot of them have great sentiment so I can’t part with them. I would imagine living on a boat that you have to be very smart with how you store all your things! Any tips would be greatly received!
